Effective government relations in South and Southern Africa

05 February 2013

Cabinet Lekgotla commences today.

The cabinet meets today for its first meeting of the year, immediately after the conclusion of the ANC National Executive Committee Lekgotla. The cabinet Lekgotla may also determine the outcome of the expected cabinet shuffle.

The cabinet will discuss the outcomes of the NEC meeting, preparations for the State of the Nation, blockages to service delivery and issues relating to workplace unrest and the challenges facing the mining sector. The latter against the backdrop of this year’s Mining Indaba in Cape Town at which hard questions are being asked of both the Government and mining houses in South Africa. The highlight today will be Minister Susan Shabangu’s address to the Indaba. Much hangs on the Minister’s speech as her delivery and tone will set the stage for mining sentiment towards South Africa.

The impact of Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant’s determination of a new minimum wage of R105 per day will be debated widely locally and internationally.
